On World AIDS Day last December 1, 2020, Nigeria officially launched the country’s National Blueprint for Integration of HIV into State Health Insurance Schemes. This significant milestone for sustainable HIV financing may signal a turning point toward greater commitment for including key programs in the services purchased by insurance schemes. The Health Policy Plus project and partners, including the National Agency for the Control of AIDS and the National Health Insurance Scheme, achieved this success working closely and strategically with state health insurance schemes and state governments. However, the impact that these state schemes can have on funds for purchasing HIV services and commodities—as well as on reducing out-of-pocket spending—will depend on their population coverage and empanelment of relevant providers.
During this webinar, panelists will review the potential for scale-up and sustainability of state health insurance schemes, using the blueprint in Lagos State as a case study. Panelists will also explore paths toward universal health coverage through bridging the health financing gap.
