Olive Mtema
Country Director, HP+ Malawi
Olive Mtema, country director for HP+ Malawi, has over 20 years of experience in public health, sexual and reproductive health, and family planning. In her work across three projects, Olive has galvanized support among Malawi’s policymakers for investments in family planning and population issues. Her parliamentary advocacy achieved a dedicated family planning line item in the national budget, and the Ministry of Finance, Economic Planning and Development now leads a multisectoral working group to promote communications and advocacy on population and development. Olive also transformed public dialogue on family planning by mobilizing support from major national religious institutions. She has extensively mentored women in advocacy and leadership for family planning and reproductive health, and taught nursing and midwifery at the University of Malawi. Olive has a Master’s in Public Health from the University of Wales, Swansea, and a bachelors in nursing and midwifery from the University of Malawi.
