Health and Population from a Muslim Perspective

HP+ collaborated with the Ministry of Religious Affairs, the Ministry of Health (Division of Reproductive Health), and Muslim leaders in Mali to develop a Muslim family planning tool with the goal of promoting healthy timing and spacing of pregnancies. Muslim leaders selected key Koranic passages related to family well-being and birth spacing, as well as passages oriented toward eliminating gender-based violence and investing in children’s well-being and education. The tool includes statistics on family planning as well as key messages for dispelling rumors and decreasing stigma toward use of contraceptives. As part of this process, religious leaders were trained on presenting family planning messages in their communities and joining advocacy efforts to hold the government accountable for the national family planning plan and commitments made to the Ouagadougou Partnership and FP2020.
