HIV Treatment Support Services in Tanzania: A Cost and Efficiency Analysis at Facility and Community Levels

Differentiated service delivery models provide an opportunity to reduce the cost of HIV treatment for stable antiretroviral therapy patients who are required to visit facilities less frequently than advanced patients, while simultaneously increasing the focus on advanced patients who most need care and support. While differentiated service delivery is a valuable treatment model in Tanzania, it does require that patients are able to receive support services that can assure adherence and retention and result in prolonged viral suppression. These support services can be provided directly at the community level, through the facility, or through some combination of facility- and community-level programs. This study assessed the costs of a package of treatment support services across the different treatment models.
