The Role of the Private Sector in Malawi’s National Condom Program

This brief describes a condom market assessment completed by HP+ to estimate the size of the commercial and social marketing condom markets in Malawi. Conducted in September 2019, the assessment documents the number of competing commercial brands, reports on estimated commercial sector sales from 2016 to 2018, and outlines regulations on the registration, importation, distribution, and promotion of condoms. The assessment further identifies key tasks that must be undertaken to strengthen private sector engagement in Malawi’s condom market: 1) increase private sector engagement through targeted, goal-oriented meetings; 2) improve timeliness and accuracy of data reported by social marketing organizations; and 3) continue to collect commercial condom market data to support total market analysis.
