Fostering Joint Accountability Within Health Systems: A Guide for Engaging Local Leaders as Champions

The material presented within this guide serves as a roadmap that advocates, program implementers, and decisionmakers can use to increase knowledge of accountability within health systems, gain skills to better understand existing accountability linkages, and seek consensus-driven recommendations for action. HP+ developed and piloted these materials through an activity on advocacy and accountability for Family Planning 2020 commitments. Although this curriculum was developed for family planning stakeholders, the authors encourage advocates and implementers in other health fields to apply a similar process to strengthen accountability for other pressing issues.

The English version of the curriculum was developed specifically for faith and community leaders and thus includes references to some accommodations facilitators may need to make to best engage these participants. The French version was developed for participants more familiar with the health system. In addition, a French facilitator’s guide was developed to support facilitators as they plan for, implement, and evaluate joint accountability skills-building workshops. The contents are based on best practices for adult learning that are applicable across workshop types.
