HP+ and the Transition to Sustainability: Private Sector Engagement

This brief describes HP+’s efforts to support private sector engagement in health systems in low- and middle-income countries. These efforts fall into one of four categories: generating evidence to understand health market dynamics, strengthening stewardship and government capacity for private sector engagement, expanding private sector health services, and exploring innovative financing opportunities to address key market barriers. While not a new priority for USAID, fostering sustainability among countries that receive support from the agency has recently received greater attention, with more focus on engaging the private sector and developing innovative financing approaches to leverage domestically mobilized funds. HP+ has pursued private sector engagement activities in 25 countries, seven of which are highlighted in the brief.
