Accelerating Progress on the Sustainable Development Goals in Malawi: The Role of Population and Family Planning

While there has been a notable increase in family planning use in Malawi, many people still have more children than they want and the country is experiencing rapid population growth. This brief offers recommendations to help stakeholders increase access to family planning and make advancements in achieving many of the Sustainable Development Goals, while contributing to social and economic development. Recommendations include increasing awareness of the linkages between population and development, improving inter-ministerial coordination, preparing stronger advocacy cases for funding, and increasing district capacity to implement policies. Finally, youth and gender issues should be well addressed in any actions taken to decrease rapid population growth.
