West Africa Health Informatics Team

Health information systems provide policymakers, health managers, and individual healthcare providers with timely and accurate information for decision making and are crucial to supporting a government’s ability to provide routine health services and respond to health emergencies. A properly functioning health information system gets vital information into the right hands at the right time.

In 2013–2015, the Ebola outbreak in West Africa exposed severe weaknesses in health information systems in the region. The outbreak went undetected for months, infecting nearly 28,000 and claiming the lives of more than 11,000 people. Responders lacked critical information needed to monitor and manage the situation comprehensively and in real-time—information that a functioning health information system could have provided.

What We Do

HP+ supported the West African Health Organization (WAHO) to develop and train the West Africa Health Informatics Team (WAHIT). While funded by HP+, WAHIT, a team of local health informatics experts, provided technical leadership and support to ministries of health across the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to strengthen health information systems through local capacity building.

Specifically, WAHIT:

  • Made immediate technical improvements in national and regional digital health information systems
  • Built local software developer capacity to support the long-term sustainability of health information system investments
  • Helped establish a regional health information system center of excellence, now embedded within WAHO

Together, these efforts fortified the existing health information systems throughout West Africa and built local capacity to better monitor, detect, and prevent future disease outbreaks. Learn more by accessing the final report and case studies.
